

If it's not engraved or marked "Silver" on the headjoint, it is almost certainly silver plated. Some had a silver headjoint, some had a silver plated headjoint, all of them had silver plated body and keys. There were a couple of variations on the Artley Symphony flute. Since you bought yours in 1948, a good guess would be that it was made around 1947 or 1948. Around then Artley was making a couple thousand flutes each year. As you noted, Artley didn't keep good records of the serial numbers prior to 1952 and serial number 10000. It plays beautifully with a big rich tone, (a tone you can only get using these older USA made instruments). Mechanically this flute is in excellent condition. Just completely polished, cleaned thoroughly, and overhauled using double skin treated pads and all new corks and felts. There are a few minor scuffs and scratches from normal use.


It's an Artley Model which is open hole, C-foot and has a solid silver headjoint. This flute dates from the heyday of band instrument manufacture in the USA, about 30 to 40 years ago. Most are high quality American made band instruments which were made to last forever. We're selling off some of the surplus of our school rental program. This superb instrument was just overhauled with all newdouble skin treated pads, new corks and felts pads by our Susan E.
